In the Studio

One thing I love to do each year is review what worked and what didn't over the the course of the year. Part of this is figuring out those 'best laid plans' and possibly why they didn't work out quite the way they were were intended.

• Plan 1 – business plan: harder than it seems, and daily work gets in the way of planning
• Plan 2 – improve studio practices: again, daily work gets in the way of process planning
• Plan 3 – documentation of artwork: ugh, daily work gets in the way of completing the task
  

Do you see a pattern here? yup, me too. And the pattern/answer is that I seem to lack the discipline to create a plan and actually follow it.  This year was a struggle in trying to get back to the roots of WHY DO I DO WHAT I DO, and the reality of making a living doing it. 

As I embark on 2018, those plans are again pushing to the forefront of my mind. Maybe it will stick this year, maybe they won't, but at the very least they will influence me. 

Seriously though, what I really learned this last year was that if I don't spend the time to create a plan, I tend to flounder and struggle with my creative focus. Planning is such a linear, pragmatic task; artwork has a reputation of being impulsive. And in my reflections, I need to acknowledge and embrace that I need the structure and focus that comes with planning and organization. So the plan for 2018 - figure it a plan to make a plan.
