I was born and raised in western Wisconsin, I have studied, worked and lived in Minnesota for almost 20 years now and currently create in my home studio on the east side of Saint Paul. As a trained architect, I was an architectural project manager in Minnesota for many years. In this capacity, I managed multi-million dollar projects from start to finish. As an artist, I work with people to design a vision that is aesthetically appealing, technically sound and beyond their expectations. In the words of one patron:
“Josephine worked with me to create the most beautiful stained glass windows for my studio workspace. She took in all of my requests for what I wanted the piece to convey, considered what colors I wanted and then came back with a proposal for what it could look like. I fully expected her to come up with something beautiful, but the amazing work of art that I have in my home today even exceeded my expectations!”
My artwork is inspired by a love of architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Impressionists, and even crazy quilts – a mix of tradition and history. Leaded stained glass evolved from grand religious art largely for churches to the more recent Tiffany- style and Prairie-style windows and objects for homes and businesses. While the construction tools have evolved with technology, the technical methods used in my artwork are virtually unchanged from those developed hundreds of years ago. Each piece of glass is still individually chosen and cut by hand. Each piece of lead, copper and zinc came is individually cut and fitted to the glass. Each lead joint is soldered. Then the entire panel is cemented for stability and cleaned before leaving the studio. Structure, design and exceptional craftsmanship are inherent characteristics of my work. My glass panels create an abstract collage, which at first glance appears as a myriad palette of colors and elusive forms, but upon closer examination is revealed as a landscape.
